What's in my bag 2010

What's in my bag 2010

1: Lowepro Orion Trekker. Got this bag for Christmas. Nice big bag with lots of room for all my equipment and personal items i.e. coat, lunch etc. Use this for traveling & hand luggage. Only gripe is that I have to take the backpack off to access my camera.

2: Lowepro Slingshot 100 AW. Bought this back after a recommendation from fellow flickr member rdavie23. Also fits all my equipment but not much personal items. Great design though as it allows me to access my camera wthout taking the backpack off. Great little bag. Comes with All Weather cover in case it decides to rain.

3: Crumpler Bens Pizza Medium. Only big enough to fit my Nikon D40 with either of my 3 lenses and thats it. Also room at the front for SD cards, cleaning clothes etc. Brilliant bag for a day out etc.

4: Lowepro D-Res 20 AW. Nice little shoulder bag, lots of padding and protection, used mainly for my Panasonic TZ5. Also comes with All Weather cover.

5: Crumpler Pretty Boy 4000 (XL). Another great bag which allows me to fit my Nikon D40 with lens attached along with another lens, or even another pocket camera.

6: Goldring NS1000 Noise Canceling Earphones. Bought these mid year so have not yet used these on an airplane but the Noise Canceling works great in the house & outside. Comes with case and gold plated leads.

7: Panasonic TZ5. Great little compact super zoom camera. Bought about 3 years ago, brilliant 10X zoom and very good quality leica lens.

8: Lowepro Terraclime 10 bag made from recycled materials. Use this for my LX3 and fits perfectly, with space for 2 SD cards.

9: My new Panasonic LX3. Love this camera. Great for street photography where a SLR is much to carry around. Brilliant Dynamic B&W and HDR modes. All in all a brilliant camera.

10: Nikon D40 with 18-55 mm lens. Bought this around 6 years ago and its still going strong, have not had a problem with it yet, fingers crossed.

11: Nikon 50mm F/1.8. Bought this with my Christmas money, can get brilliant shots with it although its only manual focus on the D40, it has taught me alot about focus and depth of field.

12: Nikon 55-200 mm lens. Bought this not long after my D40. Great for widlife and nature shots, unfortunelty did not take it to New York City with me but I will be in February.

13: Natural Density filters in different stops.

14: Joby SLR tripod. Bought this off eBay for dirt cheap, brand new and sealed. Goes everywhere in my bag, nice little gadget.

15: Chargers for all 3 cameras.

A typical bag-content in one of my medium-bags. This is a typical late-summer/fall outfit for general photography. If im doing mainly portraits I might bring the 105/1,8 instead of the 105/2,5 and skip one of the wides to get room for the bulkier 1,8.
The ND-filter and the polariser is missing in this picture.

  • UV filters are individual compounds or mixtures to prevent ultraviolet (UV) light from coming through. UV filters are used in sunscreens to protect skin or in photography to reduce haziness or fogginess created by ultraviolet light.

  • This coating is a filter for the harmful UV radiation. The coating is either put on the lens or is imbedded into the lens to protect your eyes for the harmful effect of the sun’s UV radiation.

  • This is an Ultra Violet absorbing filter that helps overcome the abundance of blue in outdoor photographs. Not really necessary in digital photography as the camera's white balance system adjusts for the colour temperature of the scene.

Tried focusing on the dust on the front of my Hoya 55mm UV(C) filter and in the atmosphere, think it turned out all right. Was trying to create an infinity effect using two mirrors at the time then revolved to this. Need bigger mirrors. Might use the internal mirror in here for a photo soon so stay tuned for that. I'm loving Photoshop at the moment, can't get enough of it. Using masks a lot in recent work, it really enhances images drastically.

The interior of my lens may not be superior but it just fascinates me. Kind of need to get a new lens, maybe a macro or portrait lens before move to a telephoto as I don't think I will get the value out of it's use. I have jotted down a few ideas for upcoming levitation photography so stay around for that by adding me as a contact if you want. I find writing this while listening to music through high-quality headphones such as my Nixon Troopers helps to bring out what I really want to say. I could write eternally this way. Nikon D90 & AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED

I just bought a new lens... The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED. I installed a Hoya 77mm UV filter as well. I also purchased a new Nikon Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 VR. I should have it tomorrow. I've taken a few shots around the house and this lens is a HUGE upgrade from my Kit lens, the 18-55mm VR. It's focus is VERY fast and produces very nice and soft Bokeh. This lens is a TANK. Solid... very solid.

This photo taken with my iPhone.

The UV filter blocks UV light that may discolor film when photographing outdoors. The UV filter is also a great way to keep dust and scratches off of your lens. Protecting your lens with a filter is a lot less expensive than replacing a damaged lens. These filters offer both amateur and professional photographers HOYA's famous quality at reasonable prices. They have coatings applied to both surfaces to suppress reflection and increase light transmission. There are a few exceptions in the special effects range which, due to the special materials used in construction, do not have coatings applied.

Shadow in Light

Shadow in Light

Testing a new Nikon 55-200mm VR lens. Overall, it feels like a natural extension to the stock Nikon 18-55mm VR lens that comes with the D5000. 200mm is equivalent to 4x the vision of humans. The 55-200mm is light, sharp, portable, almost the same minimum aperture at f/4-f/5.6 and easy to use, just like the 18-55mm lens. Unlike the 18-55mm however, it has very little distortion, even at 200mm (so little you need to place a ruler against your screen to see the distortion).

In terms of hand-held/portable shooting, the Nikon 55-200mm VR is fully operable during daytime. At 200mm, you will need to shoot at a minimum of 1/400 second to get a sharp shot hand-held, although you might get away with 1/200 second if you are shooting a stationary subject while breathing like a sniper. You will have no problem getting a shutter speed of 1/400 second on sunny days. However, due to this minimum shutter speed of 1/400 second for a sharp image hand-held, one must get comfortable with the idea of using ISO speeds in the thousands when shooting in less ideal conditions. On overcast days, you would be in the range of ISO 2000 to ISO 3600 to shoot at 1/400 second. On stormy conditions and during the blue hour, you will be in the range of the ISO "HI"s, which translate to ISO 3200-6400, marking the end of shooting hand-held at 200mm with the Nikon 55-200mm VR, at least with the D5000, because you start losing the images at ISO 3200 and above (and noise-removal filters are not enough to rescue some of the saturation and sharpness lost when shooting at high ISO speeds with the D5000).

As for the price point for the Nikon 55-200mm VR lens, I was able to get this lens at a mere €180 euros after discounts. Normal list price would probably be around €200 euros. Conclusion? The Nikon 55-200mm VR is top value, and is (for the Nikon ecosystem at least), the best tele-zoom for its price available.

Polaris the North Star

Polaris the North Star

If you get to know how to find Polaris in the night sky, you will always have a better chance of finding your way back home. Notice how Polaris is just a dot. This is because it is so near to the celestial north pole that it shows very little relative motion caused by the earth's rotation. Polaris is in the constellation Ursa Minor (Little Bear). Whereas Ursa Major is one of the constellations which shows a best fit between the star pattern and its intended image, you have to use your imagination to come up with a little bear with this one. Taken at Tabor Lake Marsh, Prince George, April 12, 2010.
